TIERRA DEL FUEGO

TIERRA DEL FUEGO NP

AT THE END OF THE WORLD

THE FIRST NAVIGATORS TO SIGHT THESE SHORES NAMED THIS LARGE ISLAND “TIERRA DE LOS FUEGOS” WHICH MEANS “FIRE ISLAND”

The very name brings to mind the image of a remote, legendary land, frequented by brave seamen, pirates, gold prospectors and missionaries trying to convert Indians amidst terrible hardships. Tierra del Fuego has typically been the synonym of a frozen hell, stricken by winds and currents that sank ships trying to come near. Although this image has changed over the course of time, this land still holds an aura of mystery and adventure, of fire and ice, of verdure and snow.

Tierra del Fuego contains all the different ecosystems that typify Patagonia on a single island: South Atlantic coast, bushy steppe, Andes surrounded by glaciers, snow, lakes and forests. As if this wasn’t enough, the island also has its unique sub-Antarctic rainforest. Unexpectedly lush beech forests are covered with a magic carpet of green mosses and lichens waving in the wind in this seemingly enchanted forest. The legendary Beagle Channel explored by Darwin is now available to search for its varied wildlife: sea lions, penguins, cormorants, etc.
