THE LAKE DISTRICT

BARILOCHE, VILLA LA ANGOSTURA, SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES & ESQUEL

LET US TAKE YOU TO EVERY CORNER OF THIS FASCINATING REGION THAT MAY BE ENJOYED ON FOOT, BY BOAT, BY BIKE AND THROUGH UNFORGETTABLE HORSEBACK RIDES

Without any doubt, one of the most stunning landscapes in the Western Hemisphere is found in the northern Patagonian Andes. For this reason, a chain of Argentine National Parks protects this natural beauty of lush forests and huge glacial-fed lakes that reflect the majestic snow-capped peaks.

The mountain slopes are covered by sub-Antarctic beech trees (Nothofagus sp) such as the “Lenga”, the high deciduous species that spectacularly changes colors in autumn. A coniferous species, the “Cordillerano” cypress, forms large woods in the transition zone between the mountains and the Patagonian steppes. The wetter zones treasure the Valdivian forest or “Cold jungle” which stretches through the passes across the Andes toward the Chilean Pacific.

The Northern Patagonia Lake district stretches from Alumine in the North up to Esquel in the South, encompassing four stunning National Parks: Lanin NP (close to San Martin de los Andes), Nahuel Huapi NP (including Bariloche city), Lago Puelo NP (off El Bolson) and Los Alerces NP (accessed from Esquel).

At 41°8′ South Latitude, San Carlos de Bariloche is located on the southern shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi. It currently has a population of 100,000, and it is the biggest city in Northern Patagonia

VILLA LA ANGOSTURA IS THE STARTING POINT TO THE FAMOUS RUTA DE LOS SIETE LAGOS

Villa la Angostura is a charming mountain village located on the Northern shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, at only 780 meters above sea level. Surrounded by rivers, lakes and millenary forests, it is the ideal destination for nature lovers that want to avoid the crowds. Although growing fast, “La Villa” remains a cozy town with a small ski resort close by at Cerro Bayo, and a summer resort area by the lake.

One of the most famous forests is the nearby “Bosque de Arrayanes” at the Peninsula Quetrihue, which in Mapuche native language means place of the Myrtles. The park aims to protect the local “Arrayan” tree (Myerceugenella apiculata), an unusual member of the myrtle family, with smooth cinnamon color spotted bark. In order to get to this “Fairyland” you may board the boats that depart from the Villa’s pier.
