EL CHALTEN

EL CHALTEN

AT THE FOOT OF MT. FITZ ROY

EL CHALTEN WAS FOUNDED IN 1985 AT THE FOOT OF THE MAJESTIC MT. FITZ ROY

The Patagonia region features a vast plateau on the eastern side of the continent, stretching for an average of 400 km between the Atlantic Ocean and the Andes range. Rising steeply above this plateau (the Patagonian steppe), the Andes expose sharp shaped mountains, due to the very recent receding of the glaciers. Surrounding these giants, we may find the most extensive ice fields outside the world’s Polar Regions. A visit to the Southern Patagonian Andes may help us imagine what the Earth looked like 10,000 years ago, over the end of the last Ice age. Peaks within the frozen plateaus appear as rock islands or Nunataks. Huge glacier tongues flow into enormous lakes. Out of 350 glaciers sliding down from the Patagonian Ice field, the Perito Moreno glacier is probably the most famous one.

As for the mountains, names such as Mt. Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and Paine are very well known to climbers all around the world, as well as their challenging sheer granite walls.
