PATAGONIAN ANDES

PATAGONIAN ANDES

THE REALM OF CONDORS, GLACIERS, LAKES AND FORESTS

ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING LANDSCAPES IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE

IS FOUND IN THE PATAGONIAN ANDES

Numerous glacier-fed lakes reflect the majestic snowcapped peaks, while the mountainsides are covered by primeval forests of sub-Antarctic beech trees. The deciduous species will change color spectacularly in autumn, striking an ever more dramatic contrast with the surrounding glaciers, definitely the highlight of any trip to this region.

Between South Parallels 48th and 51st, the Andes range is covered by a large extension of permafrost, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which stretches for 350 km/217 miles from North to South. Shared between Argentina and Chile, it is the source of 48 major glaciers, among which 13 flow towards the Atlantic Ocean, in Argentine territory, and the rest towards the Pacific fiords, in Chilean territory. The most famous one is probably the Perito Moreno glacier, easily accessed from El Calafate town. The area allows for hiking, horseback riding, over landing, and lodging in remote and isolated Estancias located by turquoise lakes.
